108 Devonport Road

Est. 1934.  Sadly in February 2024 this beautiful building is being demolished....It was a single level reinforced concrete building in the Art Deco style. The geometric parapet steps up three times on each side to the central portion. Below, the smooth plastered façade has raised plaster lettering with the number ‘108’ in the centre beneath on a raised rectangle ‘Devonport Road.’ Either side two staggered vertical lines reflect the linear parapet steps.

Single level reinforced concrete building in the Art Deco style.

The outer portion of the façade steps subtly back and the overall look is one of clean lines and flow. Below a cantilevered street verandah is suspended from six wrought iron ties. Two shops are at street with columns that appear to run to the top of the building due to the stepping back of the façade outlining the main shop entrance. The two columns have solid fretwork in a curving design that also help to frame the entrance. On the ground can be found brown and black tiles laid in a simple but effective pattern.

As recently as 2019 the building was beautifully repainted and turned into two shops ready for rent.....all to highlight the Art Deco features which is a credit to the current owner.  Sadly with the arrival of COVID and from 2023/4 th        continuing downturn of retail in the CBD, the building was sold on.......as of February 2024 this beautiful building is being demolished to be replaced with ............ ?
