Baycourt

Est. 1983.  The Baycourt Community and Arts Centre was built on the site of the old fire station on the corner of Wharf and Durham Streets and opened in 1983 by Prince Charles and Princess Diana. On the garden and lawn adjacent was once the Eiffel Tower Brewery which opened in 1912.

The adjacent Civic Centre was built on the former site of the Town Hall which was constructed in 1916 and demolished in 1987 amongst much controversy. The land being confiscated land.  The Anglican Church has since apologised and today, mana whenua and the Tauranga City Council are in the process of becoming joint owners of the land. Together they have robust plans for the site's redevelopment which is to include a library, museum and exhibition centre.
