Brain’s Cottage

Est. 1878.  Joseph Denham Brain likely built this four-roomed cottage from rough-sawn kauri weatherboards to house his family while he established his boatbuilding business. In 1881 he built what is now Brain Watkins House Museum and the family left the cottage for their larger home. By 1882 the briars in Second Avenue were said to be so bad that residents could not access their homes with carts or drays.
