Commemoration Stone

Kaimai Tunnel Commemoration Stone. The stone on the Strand is from the workings of the Kaimai Tunnel. First mooted in 1913, the $56 million tunnel cuts through the Kaimai Range. At 9.025km it is the longest railway tunnel in New Zealand. Four workers lost their lives during construction.
