Tauranga Art Gallery

BNZ Bank Vault (est. 1964). The Tauranga branch of the BNZ opened in Wharf Street in 1875, extended in 1893 and was replaced in 1930. A new building was completed in 1964 and was the first building in Tauranga to have air conditioning. Later it was transformed into the Tauranga Art Gallery, but the steel-reinforced concrete Bank Vault was retained and repurposed into a unique gallery space. The Gallery was opened by Prime Minister Helen Clark in 2007.

When visiting the Art Gallery, also visit Te Rau o Te Patu | Digital Storytelling Kiosk - near the entrance to the Gallery in pedestrian Wharf Street.
