Te Awanui | Tauranga Harbour

Te Awanui | Tauranga Harbour.  The coast and harbour of Tauranga was first surveyed and chartered in 1853. A place of strong spiritual significance and traditional history, the 210km2 tidal estuary is protected from Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa | the Pacific Ocean by Matakana Island which stretches from the north-western Katikati entrance to the south-eastern Mauao entrance. Areas of salt marsh and mānawa (mangrove) marsh are part of this significant wildlife habitat.
